Portrait of 'Giles' stage 1

10' x 12'
oil on board

Can't seem to stop painting portraits at the moment! This is Giles, my next victim! Stage 1 completed this afternoon. I'm happy with it thus far and will carry on tomorrow. I came across an interesting video today that I thought you might like to watch. It discusses the masterful brushwork of John Singer Sargent. The video is a must for anyone interested in alla prima painting.

  3. I really appreciate your dedication, Ann. Well done. I love the portraits and the video very much. I've seen this painting in person and it is amazing! it is true, as you get closer to it, you lose the larger image , you need to step back esp. that it is huge.
    thank you for sharing.

  4. Thankyou Bayda :) It's fascinating looking at the brushwork of artists such as Sargent, Goya, Velásquez, how eloquent their language of mark is and at the same time how economical it is, how incoherent it can be close up, but how it says exactly what it needs to say when viewed from a distance! They manage to put the perfect mark in the perfect place with perfect precision and somehow make it look easy!
